Hello, Trail Tenders!

You are cordially invited to attend the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor’s first D&L Trail Summit at the Ice House on Sand Island in Bethlehem on Friday, November 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This unique event will bring together the region’s foremost trail advocates, municipal managers and planners, conservationists, landowners, tourism agencies, businesses and trail users.

The D&L Trail Summit will present:

· viable examples of sustainable trail alliances that endure on the national, state, regional and local levels

· updates on the status of D&L Trail projects

· immediate plans to raise the visibility and usability of the D&L Trail in 2008

The D&L Trail Summit also will provide participants with a voice to ensure the future sustainability of the D&L Trail in Luzerne, Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton and Bucks County.

Through afternoon focus groups, participants will explore methods to:

· create a sustainable organization to manage the D&L Trail

· fund improvements to the D&L Trail

· market the D&L Trail

· maintain and enhance the D&L Trail

Linda McKenna Boxx, President of the Allegheny Trail Alliance and a driving force behind its formation, will provide the morning’s keynote speech. Linda will detail the process that led to the creation of one of Pennsylvania’s most successful trail consortiums: the Great Allegheny Passage and the C&O Canal Trail between Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

Suzanne Copping, a National Park Service Assistant Coordinator of National Heritage Areas, and Dennis DeMara, a Heritage Park Specialist for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, will follow Linda and provide overviews and updates on the National Trail System and Pennsylvania’s state trails. D&L staff members and D&L Trail partners will offer reports on specific trail projects and volunteer efforts.

There is no charge to attend this event, but your RSVP must be received by November 2. Please submit your reservation to Cindy Young by e-mail, cindy@delawareandlehigh.org, or telephone, 610-923-3548, ext. 221. We hope you make every effort to attend this important conference.

Thank you!
